My thoughts on keeping a healthy lifestyle as someone who works in IT.

When I was young I effortlessly kept a normal weight and a healthy BMI, as I grew older, naturally that started to change. Especially after the 2020 pandemic, I became more sedentary and spent most of my time at home.

Being so unhealthy led to me having difficulties for waking up on time and being productive. I started snoring and overall my physical performance decreased.

My habits didn’t change for years! I spent half of my years in uni studying from home. Then in late 2023 I got a remote internship, I was setting myself up to be a remote worker. At the end of my internship I didn’t get hired by that company (sadly) but 4 months later I got another job where I was only required to be in the office one day a week. I was on track to take my final shape:

i use arch btw

I do actually use arch btw, and my work involves Linux system administration lol

I realized I needed to change and pick up better habits if I wanted to have better results both professionally and on my daily life.

New Habits

I started by getting a gym membership in May 2025 and I was constant from the beginning. However, I knew that just working out wasn’t enough, if I wanted to see real results, I needed to also change my diet. So two weeks later I went to a nutritionist for help.

The results

After only 7 months I was back to a healthy weight and gained some muscles. Although mt main goal is not to be ripped, I feel so much better after getting back in shape.
But the changes are not just visual, I believe that’s the least important part in all of this. After all these months I feel more productive, sleep better, have more energy and working out helps me unwind from a stressful day at work.

Challenges

It is true that after a long day at the office you may feel too tired to be at the gym after work, and it may also leave you less time to work on your side projects, but you don’t have to go all in right away. Start with small changes and you can even workout at home if you get some dumb bells. Although I gotta admit that didn’t work for me.

Conclusion

keeping good habits will improve your life and help you advance in your career. Start with small changes and build up good habits. You will feel much better.
